ANTALYA (ATTALIA)
Antalya is a city on the Mediterranean coast of southwestern Turkey and country's biggest international sea resort. Land and sea everywhere meet the beaches stretching for miles or the steep cliffs. The Taurus mountains against the blue backdrop of the sky, the precipices and especially the caves close to the sea add another dimension to the beauty of the region.It is one of the most beautiful and attractive cities of Turkey to be seen anywhere, besides being exceedingly populous and well laid out separate quarter. The old town is surrounded by historic city walls. Uc Kapilar (Hadrian Gate), Kalekapisi (Castle Gate ), Saat Kulesi ( Clock Tower ), Yivli Minaret Mosque ( Fluted Minaret ) are the landmarks of this beautiful city. In Antalya the four seasons only appear on the calendar, as there is no real winter here. The summers are hot and rainless while the other months are warm and often rainy, with a mean annual temperature of 18.7 °C. On average there is no rain for 309.5 days a year.
LYCIA
The Lycians were a democratic but,independent, warlike people,with a developed art style and a high standart of living. Their strategic position gave them unique appottunities for sea-trade and ( at times) for piracy. Afetr Persians rule, The Lycians welcomed Alexander the Grade and absorbed Greek culture. Later, the Roman Empire made Lycia province ,as the Empire gave way to Byzantium many monasteries were founded in the Lycian hills. Lycian graves and ruins abound on the peninsula and the Lycian Was passes many remote historical sites.Southwest Turkey, along and inland from the popular "Turquoise Coast", was home to the ancient Lycians who were one of the most enigmatic people of antiquity. Although little historical record has been left behind them, what has been discovered reveals a fascinating people culturally distinct from the rest of the ancient world. Around twenty major sites remain today with the Lycians' unusual funerary architecture dominating the breathtaking unspoiled land of Lycia.
LYCIAN WAY
The Lycian Way is a long-distance footpath in Turkey around part of the coast of ancient Lycia. It is approximately 500 km long and stretches from Ölü Deniz, near Fethiye, to Hisarcandir, about 20 kilometers from Antalya. It is waymarked with red and white stripes, the Grande Randonnee convention. The Sunday Times has listed it as one of the world's top ten walks.It takes its name from the ancient civilisation which once ruled the area. The route is graded medium to hard; it is not level walking, but has many ascents and descents as it approaches and veers away from the sea. It is easier at the start near Fethiye and gets more difficult as it progresses.
It is recommended that you walk the route in spring or autumn; February-May or September-November. Summer in Lycia is hot, although you could walk short, shady sections. The route is mainly over footpaths and mule trails; mostly limestone and often hard and stony underfoot
PHASELIS
Most likely, settlers from Rhodes founded this coastal city in the 7th Century BC among three ports of the time. Phaselis had been the most important city of Lycia for very long time. The wide avenue measuring approximately 20 m was the center of town. The western end is the Hadrian`s Gate on both side, there were colonnades with shops. The public bath, gymnasium and theatre nearby and also there are well preserved parts of the aqueduct.
OLYMPOS – CIRALI
There is an ancient Olympos town around Cirali Village. This port city was founded in 2nd Century BC and people inhabited this town until 4th Century AD Olympos is sttuated in a beautiful valley that leads to the beach on a bright turquoise blue sea. In the north of Olympos, rises ``Yanartas
( Chimera )``burning stones. According to legend,the Lycian hero Bellerophon defeated here on his winged horse Pegasus, the fire-breathing Chimera.
ADRASAN
The Bay of Adrasan with calm waters and fine sandy beach lies west to Olympos, near Cavuskoy, a small market town.
MYRA
Myra was one of the six most important cities of Lycia and was originally a coaslat town, but due to the overflowof the river, the city of Demre lies a few miles inland today. The Lycian rock tombs the ancient theatre and the church of St. Nicholas are the main attractions of the city.
ST.NICHOLAS CHURCH
St. Nicholas was born in 225 AD in Patara that was the capital of Lycia. The church was built in the 6th Century,but the present basilica dates from the 8th Century, in the second half of the 11th Century, a monastery was built and the monks were assigned to the care of pilgrims in 1807 Italian merchants sacked the sarcophagus and took the bones of St. Nicholas to Bari. Nevertheles, the church didn`t lose its meaning entirely and continued to be visited by pilgrims. St. Nicholas symposium has been held since 1983 every year in the month of December.
THEIMIUSSA (UCAGIZ)
Ucagız is wildy romantic place, stiuated directly beside the sea on an extended and protected bay. Thetombs that are pilled up the immediate neighborhood as well as thehouses on islands and islets can be easly perceived from the water as remaining on the upper parts of a sunken ancient city. Which can be explored on a boat trip to Kekova Islands and Simena.
APERLAI
During the time of the Lycian Federation, Aperlai belonged to the group of cities of Simena, Apollonia and Isinda.These large cities had only one vote togather,which gives imformation about its relavitely small size and power. Probably the place was used as garrison town especially in times of war. Well preserved are the city walls defensive towers. Excavation haven`t taken place yet.
ANTIPHELLOS – KAS
In Greek language,``Phellos``means ``stony area`` and Antiphellos was the name of the ancient city,in place of what is now the distirt Kas. The place with its magnificent view of the outlying islands and bay (the eastern most point of Greece, the Islands of Kastelorizo) has largely retained its picturesque charters. There is also a street with typical Grrek houses that stands as a historical monument.
PATARA
Patara is famous for its naturel,18 km long and gently sloping sandy beach. The fine and white sands and also endless blue color of the sea will make you experience great joy in Patara during the while you can also swim in the evening and enjoy the meditative mood of colors of the sunset. At night beach belongs to big sea turtles where day lay their eggss since the ancient times of the history.
XANTHOS _ KINIK
Xanthos, the large and most important city of Lycia, was built on a small hill of the Xanhots valley. The important site of Xanthos includes the theatre and grave momuments, including the famous sarcophagus harpies whose relief work is in the British Museum in London now. The impression of this monolithic pillar tom has been restored by applying plaster casts of the relief panels. Not far away from the city, there is monument that is known as the Obeliks of Xanthos – a tomb from the 5th Century AD.
LETOON
Letoon ones housed the shrine of the goddess Leto. The reach in this picturesquet town has been progressing with difficult, because the remains of the ancient city are often under water, which are acoopied by tortoises, ducks and other creatures today. The findings made here are from the period between 6th and 7th Century BC.
SIDYMA
Most of the ruins date from the time of the Romans Empire, but the findings at the Acropolis suggets that the city was also inhabited by Byzantines, Stoicism can bee seen on today`s pillars and also in parts of the village there are remnants of the old houses. Moreoevr, itis worth to see the necropolis with tomb temples.
